Mary Lynne Graham
Dental Hygenist at Balsam Dental Since 1976

Congratulations to Mary Lynne on her retirement, we wish her much happiness on her new chapter!

In the small town I grew up in, there were no Registered Dental Hygienists. I happened upon a guidance magazine profiling a Dental Hygienist who worked with children out west. The article was very interesting and I thought that it would be something I would want to do. It was with incredible pride that I was accepted into the University of Toronto's Dental Hygiene program in 1976 after finishing grade 13.

Upon graduation, I was hired by Drs Rodney and Shapero. They had two offices, one in Don Mills and one on Queen Street East. I worked in the Don Mills office three days a week but was frequently at the "other office". After working part time for six years, I was given the opportunity to work full time at the Queen Street office in 1982.

Working for two dentists in the same office was a little challenging as they had different techniques and methods of doing things and were of different temperaments. But Dr. Rodney and Dr. Shapero were wonderful to work with. After Dr. Shapero left the practice in 2003, I started working with Dr. Caplan's patients as well -another challenge, as his patients were used to only Dr. Caplan cleaning their teeth! Fortunately, over time, they were convinced that Dental Hygienists could clean teeth as well as Dr. C.

I was faced with more changes as Dr. Rodney retired in 2010, Dr. Caplan in 2015 and Dr. Shinde buying the practice in 2015.

Balsam Dental has always been a neighbourhood oriented practice. It has been amazing meeting so many different people and families over the past 41 years. I have so many fond memories of patients who are no longer with us. Several of my patients were pregnant the same time I was. I have watched two generations grow up. I really came to regard the clients as family.

I have worked with so many staff over the years. I have many, many fond memories. We had parties, outings, spa days and I hope I will continue to get together with the gang. After 41 years working, what does one do with themselves? I'm still trying to figure it out. My biggest passion is playing in Pipe and Drum bands. I play both the tenor drum and the bass drum. There are competitions coming up and a trip to Scotland for the World's Championship in August. Being available for my family is wonderful and not having time restraints is great.

I feel I've done okay pursuing a career I knew very little about! I loved being a Dental Hygienist, I enjoyed mentoring other Dental Hygienists and Dentist Associates and I know I contributed a great deal to Balsam Dental. The office on Queen Street is part of my life and my heart and I cherish my time there.

At Balsam Dental, your smile is very important to us.

Our goal is to provide the highest quality of dental care in a friendly, warm and caring environment. We believe it is important to educate and communicate, so our patients will be able to make informed choices when it comes to their dental health.

At Balsam Dental, we strive to minimize our ecological footprint and reduce consumption. The use of digital radiography eliminates photo chemical wastes such as fixers, developers and cleaners. It reduces radiation from the dental office, which is better for patients and staff.

We are constantly updating and revising our protocols, transitioning to a paperless office with the use of practice management software.

Our mission is to achieve a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile for each and every one of our patients. We are committed to providing the highest quality dental care in the same warm, caring, and professional manner we would extend to members of our own family.
